The first thing you notice when you walk in. The space you use most every day.
Once you know the feeling, come the choices.
Every bathroom is built from hundreds of decisions. These are the ones that matter most, grouped by area, so nothing is left to chance.
The vanity area
The first thing you notice when you walk in. The space you use most every day.
Vanity
Wall-hung makes the room feel larger. Floor-standing offers more storage. Material — laminate, timber veneer, two-pack polyurethane — changes the entire character. Flat panel, shaker or fluted.
Benchtop
Engineered stone is our most recommended option. Porcelain is virtually indestructible. Edge profile and thickness matter. Square is sharp, pencil round softens it. 12mm sleek to 40mm bold.
Basin
Above-counter as a feature. Undermount for seamless. Round is soft, rectangular is structured. Two basins make sense in a shared ensuite.
Tapware
Wall-mounted is clean and minimal. Bench-mounted is more flexible. Brushed brass, matte black, chrome, brushed nickel. Carry one finish consistently across the bathroom.
Mirror & shaving cabinet
Square is structured. Round is organic. Arched adds character. Shaving cabinet adds hidden storage. Recessed must be planned early.
The wet area
Where your bathroom does its most important work. Waterproofing, plumbing, feel.
Shower screen
Enclosed contains water well. Walk-in is seamless and spacious. Frameless is sleek and the most popular. Clear glass keeps things light. Fluted adds texture and privacy.
Shower tapware
Combination overhead rain + handheld is the most practical. Overhead-only, wall or ceiling-mounted, creates a spa-like feel. Match the basin tapware finish.
Waste
Linear sits along one edge — sleek, ideal for large format tiles. Point waste is traditional. Tile-insert is virtually invisible. Match the tapware finish.
Niche
Built-in recessed space in the shower wall. Standard, full-length, shelved or stacked. Must be planned before waterproofing — placement affects membrane and tile layout.
Bath
Freestanding becomes the focal point. Back-to-wall sits flush. Built-in is most practical for families. Floor-mounted tapware makes a statement; wall-mounted is cleaner.
Flooring & walls
Your tiles are the largest surface. They set the tone for everything else.
Material & finish
Ceramic — budget-friendly. Porcelain — go-to choice, durable, mimics stone, timber, concrete. Natural stone — marble, limestone, travertine, quartzite. Terrazzo — personality. Microcement — seamless, grout-free, contemporary.
Size & layout
Larger format tiles make a space feel expansive with fewer grout lines. Smaller tiles add texture. Straight, offset, herringbone or diagonal — the laying pattern changes the entire feel even with the same tile.
Grout
Small decision, significant visual impact. Match for seamless. Contrast for a statement. Always get physical samples — a tile that looks perfect on screen can look completely different in your light.
The details that matter
The decisions most people leave for last. The ones that define how finished the space feels.
The toilet
Wall-hung — sleek, easy floor cleaning. Back-to-wall — flush, practical. In-wall — most modern, cistern hidden. Close-coupled — traditional, budget. With in-wall, the flush plate finish ties in with tapware.
Lighting & electrical
Downlights for general lighting. Pendants or sconces near the vanity for warmth. Mirror lighting is essential for grooming. Exhaust fan is not optional — it prevents mould long term. Plan power locations before tiling.
Accessories
Heated towel rail is worth it in Melbourne winters. Position robe hooks early so they don't interfere with door swing or shower screen. Match every accessory to your tapware finish.
